INDIA TO HOUSE 60 MILLION OSTEOARTHRITIS PATIENTS BY 2025. ARE YOU ONE OF THEM ? There are more than 100 types of arthritic conditions , but osteoarthritis is the most chronic joint degenerative condition. It is typically a non -inflammatory degenerative disease of the joint that deteriorates the articular cartilage, leads to osteophyte formation ( bony projections on the articulating surface) and deformity of joints. Osteoarthritis is no longer a medical condition for the elderly (60 or >60), it is now being frequently reported in younger age groups too. Is this an evolutionary drift, or the trends are pointing out to something? In India, growing obesity rates , vitamin D deficiency, jobs that involve kneeling, squatting or lifting heavy loads, and untreated joint injuries are major factors that can lead to osteoarthritis, affecting almost 15 million people each year. We Indians are more vulnerable to osteoarthritis than people f...

THE ANTI-DIABETIC RUN Controlling & preventing type 2 diabetes with Physical Therapy IMPORTANT BENEFITS OF EXERCISE IN DIABETICS It prevents the onset of Diabetes Mellitus type 2(DM) in those at risk. It increases insulin sensitivity and decreases insulin requirements. It reduces risk of coronary heart disease in individuals with DM. Post-exercise hypoglycaemia could be a problem in people taking insulin and/or some oral hypoglycaemic medications (e.g. sulphonamides). A balance between carbohydrates consumption, medications before and after exercises, and intensity of exercise should be found by measuring blood glucose levels before, during and after exercise.(Refer the image below). GOOD TO KNOW For patients with diabetic complications such as proliferative retinopathy , one must avoid isometric weightlifting or exercises involving Valsava manoeuvre, head-down position or head jarring. Patients with peripheral neuropathy should avoid jarrin...

INDIA IS GETTING TOO SWEET India is projected to be home to 109 million individuals with diabetes by 2035. - Indian Heart Association. 2015. There is a fourfold rise in the number of diabetics – from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 and half of them live in India, China, USA, Brazil and Indonesia. China, India and USA are among the top three countries with a highest number of diabetic population. -The Lancet, 2017. National programme on prevention and control of diabetes in India: Need to focus , Verma et al, Australasian medical journal, 2012. Although India accounts for about 15% of the world's diabetes burden, its spending on healthcare related to diabetes is only 6.4% of worldwide spending; health resource allocations should reflect the burden of disease. Additional resources allocated to diabetes care should go toward stronger prevention efforts, diagnostic infrastructure (especially in rural a...

REHABILITATING THE FAILED HEART No more FAKE & HYPED exercises. We bring you the most authentic & scientifically proved Physical therapy interventions from across the globe. CHECK THIS OUT. Aerobic interval training in patients with heart failure and an implantable cardioverter defibrillator: a controlled study evaluating feasibility and effect, European Journal of Preventive Cardiology: January 8, 2014, doi: 10.1177/2047487313519345 Conclusions: An AIT programme is feasible and seems safe in a well-treated, stable ICD population. Further, AIT for 3 months results in significantly increased aerobic capacity and endothelial function in this population. Blumenthal et al, Effects of Exercise Training on Depressive Symptoms in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure: The HF-ACTION Randomized Trial, Journal of the American Medical Association Conclusions: Compared with guideline-based usual care, exercise training resulted in a modest reduction ...

HEART ATTACK KILLS 1 IN EVERY 33 SECOND IN INDIA, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? QUICK FACTS There are estimated 40 million heart patients in India. 25% of heart attacks occur under the age of 40. Heart attacks occur without warning in 50% of the cases. The death rate in those who reach a hospital and get modern treatment is five per cent. According to the World Health Organisation, non- communicable diseases (NCDs) or chronic diseases such as cancer, heart ailments, respiratory diseases and diabetes kill 38 million people globally every year. Over 20% of the India’s population suffers from at least one of the NCDs, which would cost India an estimated USD 6.2 trillion from 2012 to 2030, a government report said. EXERCISE YOUR TENSION! As little as 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity can reduce systolic blood pressure by up to 20 mmHg, and longer bouts of up to 60 minutes have even greater effects. The effect persists for up to 24 hours after completing the activity. Flexibility and balance training component into all exercise prescription programmes is highly recommended & all major muscles groups should be stretched at least 2-3 times a day. ACSM guidelines . TAKING PRECAUTIONS IS ALWAYS BETTER Patients with BP ≥200/115 mm Hg should not exercise without a full exercise testing screen and medical supervision. β-blockers decrease exercise capacity and inhibit normal heart rate responses during maximal and sub-maximal exercise. Ca2+ channel blockers, Nitrates, and α-blockers can cause post exercise hypotension, a graduated cool down component should be emphasised for patients at risk. Avoid exercises that result in the ‘Valsalva manoeuvre’ such as isometr...

ASSESSING THE "5TH" VITAL SIGN, EXERCISE "I exercise , but don't know whether I fall within the optimally desired range or not." If that's YOU, THEN ,THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE MISSING! The link between exercise and good health has long been established, as hinted at by Hippocrates more than 2000 years ago and supported by reams of more recent research. Exercise can however seem difficult to quantify, unlike an individual’s blood pressure or pulse rate, which can be represented in simple terms. It may be for this reason that physicians are notoriously poor at recording an individual’s exercise load, or it may simply be that they consider it less “vital”. When your Physical Therapist, prescribes your exercises, ALWAYS stick to that protocol. Performing below or above a prescribed range will NEVER benefit you. KNOW YOUR TARGET ZONE Don't do your exercises blindly, use the following parameters. Subtract your age from 220 to get you...

A very significant (p=0.00) association was found between antenatal pelvic floor muscle exercise, prevention and treatment of SUI indicating that pelvic floor exercise helps prevent SUI during antenatal period. ...

DEALING WITH PROLAPSE WHILE PREGNANT Check this out. THIS IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW! A prolapse is a name used when your uterus, bladder or bowel comes down into the vagina instead of sitting in its normal position. It is much more common in women who have had at least one vaginal birth. A prolapse can cause a heavy, dragging or aching sensation in the vaginal area, which often feels worse at the end of the day and better in the morning or after lying down. Some women also notice lower abdominal ache and backache due to having a prolapse. REASON : The pelvic organs are supported from above by ligaments and by the pelvic floor muscles and fascia (fibrous tissue within the pelvic floor) from below. If either or both of these structures weaken, there is less support for the pelvic organs and they can start to drop down. More reasons to know; Injury or a weakened pelvic floor Body type : Some women have softer connective tissue than others, which means the ligame...
