HEART ATTACK KILLS 1 IN EVERY 33 SECOND  IN INDIA, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

QUICK FACTS
  • There are estimated 40 million heart patients in India.
  • 25% of heart attacks occur under the age of 40.
  • Heart attacks occur without warning in 50% of the cases. The death rate in those who reach a hospital and get modern treatment is five per cent.
  • According to the World Health Organisation, non- communicable diseases (NCDs) or chronic diseases such as cancer, heart ailments, respiratory diseases and diabetes kill 38 million people globally every year.
  • Over 20% of the India’s population suffers from at least one of the NCDs, which would cost India an estimated USD 6.2 trillion from 2012 to 2030, a government report said.
  • Men living in cities are three times more prone to heart attacks than people living in villages. As for women, the risk rises significantly after menopause.

HEART ATTACK Vs. HEART FAILURE

Heart failure (HF) is an abnormality of the cardiac system resulting in a failure of the heart’s ability to deliver oxygen at a rate to meet the requirements of metabolising tissues. Heart failure is mainly a clinical diagnosis where patients exhibit typical symptoms and signs due to a defect of function or structure of the cardiac system.

Heart attack or myocardial infarction(MI), is a sudden inability of heart to provide blood to its musculature, that ultimately leads to death of cardiac muscles.

TYPES OF HEART ATTACK

Apart from the above , MI is also classified as ;

STEMI (ST SEGMENT ELEVATION MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION
The elevated ST segment indicates that a relatively large amount of heart muscle damage (myocardial damage) is occurring (because the coronary artery is totally occluded).

NSTEMI (NON-ST SEGMENT ELEVATION MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION)
NSTEMI usually occurs by developing a partial occlusion of a major coronary artery or a complete occlusion of a minor coronary artery previously affected by atherosclerosis.

UNSTABLE ANGINA
Unstable angina is characterized by partial/intermittent occlusion (blockage) in a coronary artery, with no myocardial damage. Causes unexpected chest pain usually at rest.
