INDIA IS HYPER-TENSE.
High blood pressure (BP) is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, which accounts for one in every eight deaths worldwide. It has been predicted that, by 2020, there would be 111% increase in cardiovascular deaths in India. KNOW YOUR BEST OPTIONS! CHECK THIS.
GOVT Survey : Over 20% Indians Suffer from Hypertension & diabetes. The Indian Express, 2017
A health survey conducted in 2015-16 across 26 states & union territories has found that more than fifth of India's 125 crore population suffers from diabetes & hypertension, with highest being Punjab at 35%, Sikkim 44.8% and Maharashtra 26%.
BUT, PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP
Effect of Aerobic Exercise Training on Blood Pressure in Indians: Systematic Review, Punia et al,Int J Chronic Dis. 2016;1370148.
In a meta-analysis of 142 studies from rural and urban populations of India, it was concluded that hypertension is emerging as a major health problem in India and is more in urban than in rural subjects and is associated with a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD), congestive heart failure, and stroke. Aerobic training of 4-week duration would reduce BP to a clinically significant level in Indian population. This reduction is more pronounced in clinical conditions like hypertension and diabetes. So this type of training should be used as primary prevention in high risk population and as secondary prevention in hypertension, diabetes, and so forth.
HOW PHYSICAL THERAPY HELPS IN REDUCING HTN, KNOW THE SCIENCE.
Blood pressure varies depending on the type, duration and intensity of the exercise. The typical response during aerobic exercise is an initial drop in systolic BP associated with peripheral pooling, and then a steady rise in line with increased cardiac output. The magnitude of the increase depends on the intensity and duration of the exercise. The precise mechanisms responsible for the reduction in blood pressure post exercise remains unclear. However, a number of contributory factors
have been identified:(Refer the image below).
